Just wanted to say a very big thank you for helping to arrange a super successful party for Annabelle’s 21st last Saturday Night.  The venue was great, the staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was fantastic.  A lot of our guests had favourable comments about the evening.  I would not hesitate in recommending your venue to our friends for future functions.

Hi Lee-Ann, We had a wonderful night. I’ve received lots of feedback already about what a great venue it was.

Please my thanks onto Robert(?), the wonderful bar man who looked after everyone whilst keeping the RSA intact.

A big thanks to the kitchen as well, the food was amazing and the arancini balls continue to be the personal favourite.

Finally, thank you for being patient with us and getting us all sorted, it made the organising so much easier.

A Culinary Christmas

SCOTT Webster's Carrington Place has welcomed former County Dining chef Jamie Ryan to the kitchen for the festive season.

In an added boon for the restaurant, former Bacchus chef Tim Montgomery will also be in the Carrington Place kitchen in the lead-up to Christmas.

The Carrington restaurant and bar opened in 2009 with Webster at the helm, continuing a career that has spanned four decades in Australia and abroad where he has worked at leading international hotels and restaurants.

In 2010 he also opened the award-winning Osia Bar and Restaurant in Singapore, while earlier this year he launched Wickham's Throsby Street Providore.

While Webster might spend time in noted kitchens around the globe, he loves nothing more than cooking for his home-town followers.

"My passion is creating a unique style of modern Australian cuisine. When diners come to Carrington Place they know they will have an interesting selection to choose from with most ordering something they've never tried before," Webster said.

Meanwhile, Ryan brings culinary clout to the Carrington kitchen, from his time at Morpeth's celebrated County Dining and also the Civic Theatre Brasserie, London's The Devonshire House and Sam's Brasserie, The Brewery Restaurant and Caves Beachside Resort.

Below is a selection of Carrington Place a la carte menu. Head in on Tuesday or Wednesday for a two-course ($35) or three-course ($45) set menu with BYO.

The Carrington Place bar also serves tapas, with live jazz on Thursdays.

Starters: Cured salmon, pickled fennel, orange, quinoa, sorrel and creme fraiche $22; truffled goats curd, asparagus, creamed chestnut, honey vinaigrette $20 (vegetarian); peasant lamb terrine, chickpea shoots, smoked tomato, grape caramel $22.

Mains: Confit duck leg, pickled red cabbage, heirloom carrot, nashi pear, jus gras $38; barramundi fillet, kipfler potatoes, fennel puree, lemon verbena butter sauce $36; braised pork neck, skin crackling, pommes puree, green beans, romesco sauce $34; corn-fed chicken breast, butternut, serrano jamon crisps, pea tendril $34; semolina gnocchi, tomato fondue, whipped ricotta, burnt sage butter (vegetarian) $18/$28.

Stone hearth grills: Served with idaho potato, confit tomato, field mushroom, cafe de Paris butter. Black angus reserve beef fillet "mignon" $44; great southern scotch fillet $38; cattleman's rib steak on the bone $49; Byron Bay berkshire pork cutlet $34; barbecue glazed lamb belly $32.

I just wanted to send you an email to thank you all for the wonderful night we had on the 21st March. It was the perfect venue to celebrate my 30th birthday party. I wanted to let you know that everyone commented on just how amazing the bar is and just how perfect the space was. 

Also all guests have told me just how fabulous the food was that we had on the night- almost half of my guests work in the hospitality industry and there was also a few chefs with us and they all said to let the kitchen know the food was great. Also to the wait staff who made sure all quests received the food all night, even those sitting outside. The bar staff were also amazing - nothing was a drama and they were all very friendly. 

Once again I just wanted to thank you for all of your help. The party was wonderful and we will be back again soon. I also wanted to make sure we didn't leave anything behind.

Hi Leanne,

I just wanted to email you and let you know we had the best time on Saturday night! Everyone were awestruck when we walked into the private room that was beautifully decorated. We all felt very special. Graham was the absolute best host I have ever had, and everyone remarked on how knowledgeable, funny and efficient he was. Kirri was also fantastic as well as the bar staff that made our drinks.

The food was absolutely spectacular and we were all blown away with the quality, presentation and taste of the food (especially the chocolate dessert!!).

Thank you to yourself and all your staff for making it such a memorable and wonderful night. I can’t wait to come back again.

Hi Scott and Lee-Anne, I just want to thank you for everything. It went really well (despite my family's tardiness). I appreciated the help from your staff and their willingness to accommodate last minute requests. The room was lovely and the food was really great. There were lots of positive comments. I noticed that a few who had claimed that they weren't that hungry managed to eat almost everything on their plate. Had our first dinner at Carrington Place last night, the food & service was excellent but the highlight was the Chocolate Soup, it was to die for! (April 2013)


My partner and I went on a cruise in February 2012 and stayed at Carrington Place the night prior to departure. We were extremely impressed with the high level of customer service we received whilst staying at your guesthouse. We were greeted with a friendly smile and a fantastic attitude, had a lovely meal in the restaurant that evening, drinks in the bar and lunch the next day. The food was delicious and reasonably priced and the room was spacious and clean. I don't usually send a letter to establishments we have stayed at whether they are good or bad but felt that in this case I would express my gratitude. The cruise was our first trip overseas and your friendly atmosphere was a great start to a fantastic holiday. We will definitely be staying with you when in Newcastle in the future. (February 2012)

We booked late and the place was really busy when we got there but the way the staff treated us you would have never known. The bar is lovely to have a pre dinner drink and the open kitchen is beautiful. Food was unreal. (January 2012)


After spending a night at Carrington Place recently with my wife and son, I feel obliged to write and tell you what an utterly pleasant experience it was. The rooms were just beautiful - the little touches like fresh fruit most appreciated - and the degree of service second to none. The staff were all very friendly and happy to oblige our little requests (like some milk for my son's bottle at 10 o'clock at night!) and the premises immaculately well-maintained. If I'd paid twice what you'd charged I wouldn't have been disappointed. My only regret was not making time to dine in your restaurant. thanks for the lovely evening we had to celebrate my son's 25th birthday. I was very impressed by the young chef 'Scotty' who never stopped all evening. Owner Scott came and gave some very useful assistance to him when the service was very busy for the wedding but he never skipped a beat respecting his boss and carrying out his duties. I shook Scotty's hand but would like to extend a further thanks and congratualtions to all staff who have made this a place I will return to and recommend to others. (November 2012)


The night was amazing and ran like clockwork! Everyone is still talking about it!!! My wife and I cannot thank you enough for all of your efforts and we will be back hopefully many, many times in the future! It is by far our favourite place in Newcastle.


SMH “Good Pub Food Guide” 2011  Nestled in the industrial harbourside heartland of Carrington, a real dining treasure has been hiding. There is a wonderful sense of occasion as you enter the dining area and are ushered to your church pew style seats. The muted tones are positively glowing thanks to some clever lighting. The contemporary Australian menu was created by internationally acclaimed chef, Scott Webster. The Berkshire pork belly is a tender chock paired with a glassy, delicate sea scallop, cauliflower puree and apple and raisin salsa. The creamy risotto has an abundance of fresh wild mushrooms, asparagus and marscapone. Three stone hearth ovens work overtime in the open kitchen. The flames adding to the ambience and the food they produce is sublime. Service is unfailingly polite and a small wait for our order to be taken is little cause for concern when there is so much to savour”

My wife and I have been regulars at the bar for a drink after work or weekend coffee and have had breakfast a few times, but last night was our first restaurant experience . . . the food was exquisite and the service was warm and friendly. It was one of the best a la carte experiences I have ever had in Newcastle - or anywhere else in the world for that matter. I've posted a comment on my facebook page to spread the word. This is not an enquiry but I just felt compelled to let you know what a wonderful job you are doing. It is rare to find a restaurant in Newcastle that really delivers in every aspect. I just got home from my first meal at your lovely restaurant where the food was delicious. The winter warmer entree plate was original and tasty (this, or some variation of it, HAS to stay on the menu all year!). My pork chop was divine, the best I've ever had~ perfectly cooked! The Maitre 'D and waitress were both excellent; friendly, polite and knowledgeable. We just popped in for a quick dinner after work, not expecting a special night, but that's what it turned in to. At the same time, we did not feel uncomfortable even though we had expected a casual meal and found ourselves in more up market surroundings. We were still relaxed, mainly due to your wonderful staff. Even just as we walked in the door the barman (with dreds?) was very welcoming, and from there on, the staff did not fail, in the kitchen and on the floor. Congratulations on what you have done with every aspect of the old Oriental, and I look forward to introducing other food-lover friends to your establishment. Complements to your wait staff and chef this was one of the finest service I have had in a very long time, as you are aware I have spent most of my career in 5star resorts, so I know good service and the smallest of details make all the difference.
